February 5, 1960: Ray Kroc buys out the McDonald's brothers. In 1955 Kroc opened the first McDonald's franchise in Des Plaines, IL. He buys out the brothers, the original owners of a drive-in eatery in San Bernadino,CA called "McDonald's", five years later.
February 10, 1863: P.T.Barnum's star "little people", Tom Thumb and Lavinia Warren, are married in a celebrity style wedding. 200 guests attend, many of them "the elite and creme de la creme of soceity." The tiny couple meet with President Abraham Lincoln on their honeymoon tour.
February 14, 1870: Esther Morris becomes the world's first female justice of the peace.
February 14, 1876: Rival inventors Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell both apply for patents on the telephone.
February 15, 1798: The first serious fist fight occurs in Congress. Representative Roger Griswold of CT and Matthew Lyon of VT got into it when Representative Lyon slighted Griswold's home state. Griswold retaliated by insulting Lyon's war record. Lyon promptly spit in Griswold's face. Two weeks later, Griswold attacked Lyon at his desk with a stout stick, and Lyon counter-attacked with a pair of fire tongs snatched from the fireplace behind the House speaker. House members finally separated them.
February 23, 1846: The Liberty Bell tolls for the last time, for George Washington's birthday
February 24, 1914: Joshua Chamberlain dies of war wounds, the last Civil War soldier to do so.
February 25, 1836: Samuel Colt patents his revolver.
