Outdoor Wednesday: A Trip to Door County

It's time again for Outdoor Wednesday hosted by A Southern Daydreamer!

For our first wedding anniversary in 2008, Erik and I took a weekend getaway to historic and charming Door County in northern Wisconsin. We stayed at a beautiful bed-and-breakfast there called The White Gull Inn. The Inn is famous for it's Door County Cherry Stuffed French Toast.

The White Gull Inn

Our anniversary is April 27, but we actually took our "anniversary" trip in mid-May, so the tulips were blooming!
I was enamored of this beautiful gate that opened into a memorial garden adjacent to an old church that was next door to the bed and breakfast. The Inn is located in a small town called Fish Creek, which is one of several popular towns to visit on the peninsula. I wondered if this had once been part of a cemetary originally.
Here's the picturesque church the garden belongs to. I think it was built in 1871.
In the patio area behind the inn (that small bungalow is one of several guest cottages that can be rented) they have the fire going for a traditional fish boil. To read more about what exactly a fish boil is, click here.
We watched the Master Boiler throughout the process from our private veranda on the second floor of the Inn, but we had dinner elsewhere!
There's lots to do in Door County. My parents used to take us camping to Door County often when I was a child. There's a lot of water sports and activities, boat tours, museums, hiking, biking, shopping, historic tours, antique-ing, cherry picking and much, much more.
There are many beautiful state parks on the peninsula; one of the largest, Peninsula State Park, is near Fish Creek. With Green Bay on one side and Lake Michigan on the other side of the "Door", there's lots of lighthouses around ( There's even a Lighthouse Tour). We went hiking in Peninsula State Park and visited this lighthouse at Eagle Bluff.
This lighthouse was built in 1868.
And here's my hubby, with Green Bay in the background. This was right near the edge of the bluff that the lighthouse sits on.
We hiked all over the park.
Besides hiking, we drove all over the peninsula, visiting all the other little towns and of course, stopped at many antique stores along the way!  As part of our Romantic Weekend getaway package, we also got to take a very pleasant tour of Fish Creek in this horse-drawn carriage.

And even though this isn't an outdoor picture, I can't resist showing a picture of the beautiful canopy bed in our room!

Thanks for joining me!

Believe it or not, I have never been to Door County. It is on my "bucket list." Certainly looks like you and hubby enjoyed your stay. Loved the cyber tour.

Hi Katie,
We live in Wisconsin too, on the Western side of the state. Hubby and I go to Door County at least once a year and love it! Your pics are great, I just love the fish boils! Cindy
