Tablescape Thursday: A Holiday Sideboard-Scape!

I had wanted to post this "sideboard-scape" awhile ago, but then got caught up in all my other tablescape ideas that I didn't get to it! I put this together last year at Christmas for a Holiday Open House that Erik and I hosted at our home for friends and family. I hope that nobody minds seeing something Christmas-y in Spring!

Thanks once again to Susan at Between Naps on the Porch for hosting another Tablescape Thursday!

This is our sideboard, which we purchased on eBay in 2007. We had to drive to Napierville, Illinois to pick it up. It was made by the Batesville Cabinet Company, in Batesville, IN., which was renowned for it's fine cabinetry. The company was formed in 1879 and later, two other companies were merged with the Batesville Cabinet Company; they were the American Furniture Company, which manufactured bedroom furniture and the Batesville Coffin Company, which made coffins. Batesville Cabinet specialized in fine dining room furniture.

We served very simple fare at the open house; I put mostly desserts on the sideboard with other snacks and appetizers on the dining room table. The three-tiered stand has an assortment of Christmas cookies, with more on another plate next to it. My glass covered cake stand has a red velvet cake with vanilla icing inside. (There was a second cake also, not pictured!)

Mmmm....Christmas cookies! I used my white cut-work lace dresser scarf on top of the sideboard and tucked some sprigs of faux red berries and greenery in between plates.

I made all the cookies myself. I am a Christmas cookie freak. Including home-made fudge on the top tier. It's hard to see, but I had white paper lace doilies lining the plates.

I did have candles lit later on but did not take pictures. I also did not do a lot of close-up pictures. The open house was for Christmas 2008, long before my "tablescape days", so I only took a couple quick shots!
The small plates with red and gold I had recently acquired only a couple of months before the party at a large antique mall. They are bread/dessert plates and I got twelve of them. They were two for $1, so I paid six dollars. I loved the red and gold colors and the pretty flowers on them. There were no other plates that matched that I could find, but at such a great price,  I knew I could use them as appetizer plates for parties. The napkins are actually paper; they are Chinet brand, and are the "fancy" kind with an embossed pattern on them. They actually fold very nicely. I made buffet server folds to tuck the dessert forks into. I lined them up on the sideboard next to the plates and they made a pretty, yet functional, display.

Thanks for stopping by! I promise to have an actual tablescape for next time!

How pretty and yummy looking! I do an Open House every year for friends! Since I put so much work into decorating, I like to share my home with others. I reached my max last year though of 12 trees!! I don't think I can handle anymore. Ladies from our church want me to do an Open House this year and charge admission as the fund raiser for our church. I don't know if I can handle that either!!

The sideboard is beautiful...the cookies look delicious! I love doing all the cutout cookies, just wish I could find someone to cut them and bake them, leaving the decorating to me!

Everything looks beautiful! Your sideboard is a very handsome piece. The little plates are wonderful, and what a fantastic price you paid! Folding the (very nice) paper napkins as you did was a nice touch. It looks very elegant. I didn't mind seeing images from Christmastime at all. It's my favorite time of year, so I'm always happy to be reminded that it'll be rolling around again in a few months!

Regards,
Bill

Your sideboard is a beautiful piece and the perfect place for a dessert buffet. I really enjoyed seeing all the pretty cookies and cakes and your dishes. I love how you did the nakins, it added a sense of formality. I bet it looked really nice by candlelight!

A very pretty "sideboard" scape!

Not all Midwestern states eat biscuits and gravy! But you ought to try it -- it is very good!

I love your sideboard! I have been on the lookout for anything that would work as one. Garage sale season is just starting and I hope to redo something. I never had a dining room and then we remodeled and our old living room is dining room size, so it is in redecorating limbo hoping to grow up and become a dining room. Your sideboardscape is lovely. I am thinking at Christmas you could take orders for Christmas cookies and make some extra $$!
